When the school received the package, our Year 5/6 teacher (who is also the school’s science coordinator) was extremely excited – we decided that it would be a good project for one of our Year 5 boys, who has extremely complex social , emotional and mental health needs, to build. This young man carefully follow the instructions and worked with his adult to construct and test the telescope. He then created three child friendly instructional posters on how to use the telescope safely and what objects could be observed through it in the night sky. The teacher then encouraged this year 5 child to put together a presentation and deliver training to the class on how to use the telescope safely – which he did. It was fantastic to see a young person, who struggles on a daily basis with his emotions and anxieties, grow in confidence and share his knowledge and understanding of a topic with his peers. It gave him a huge amount of satisfaction and the adults working with him were extremely proud of what he achieved. He is now our telescope monitor, which has helped him to develop friendships and communicate with other children that might previously not engaged with.
Thank you on behalf of the school for providing such a valuable and enjoyable piece of scientific equipment for our children to use.
